Training

As a manager it is your job to define the club’s training regime. The training system has been designed with flexability in mind. It allows you to keep training very simple if you wish, or if you prefer, it can become more complex, addressing the individual needs of each player. However you choose to train your players, the goal is simple; To get the best out of each and every player, as quickly as possible.

How well a player trains is impacted by a number of things:

Age is a factor and as players approach retirement you may start to see decreases in certain skills.

Coaching The quality of your coaching team.

Player condition Players with high fatigue and/or knocks wont respond as well as they could.

Players need matches Training is all well and good but there is no replacement for matches. To develop, a player needs the opportunity to play.

All players are different and are of differing abilities. In principle each player will eventually reach a maximum in each skill and if that happens, the skill bar will show as red. The better the player, the harder it is to get him to his maximum potential. A poor coach would never be able to take a great player all the way. Its more likely that a player will simply stop improving because your staff are not of sufficient quality to take the player beyond that level. You should consider this when changing your coaching staff and when buying new players. Player skills will only decline in the event they miss training for a prolonged period (even if injured) or if they are getting closer to retirement. This slowdown will occur for all players, however when it starts in relation to when they will retire will vary, that is to say for some players it may start 2-3 seasons before retirement, for others maybe only half a season.

The Coaching Screen:

There are a number of training assignments that can be selected and these are listed below, along with the players skills they effect. Some of these assignments focus on serveral skills, whilst others may focus on only one or two. The fewer the skills trained, the better the improvement. For example selecting a 'Training match', will give all skills a small boost, where as selecting 'Cross country' would give stamina a much larger boost.

Attack overloading Focus on general attacking skills. Improve crossing, shooting, movement, technique, accuracy, control, dribbling and anticipation.

Attacking set pieces Not converting enough corners or free kicks ? Improve set pieces, crossing and anticipation.

Closing-down Having trouble getting hold of the ball ?
Improve communication, marking, movement, passing, stamina and tackling.

Cross country Fitness is crucial, especially in the final stages of a match, make sure your team can keep going right to the very end. Improve stamina.

Defensive overloading Focus on those defensive duties.
Improve awareness, clearance, communication, concentration, handling, heading, marking, reflexes, tackling and timing.

Defensive set pieces Conceding too many goals fron corners and free kicks? Improve set pieces, awareness, movement and heading.

Five-a-side match Nothing gets the heart going like some fast and furious five a side. Improve control, dribbling, handling, marking, pace, passing, shooting, stamina, strength, and tackling.

Goalkeeping A must for keepers. Improves awareness, clearance, communication, concentration, distribution, handling, reflexes and strength.

Long-range passing For switching play and the long ball specialists. Improve distribution, accuracy, passing and clearance.

Shooting Improve shooting, anticipation, technique, heading and accuracy.

Crosses A key skill especially for those wide players. Improve Crossing, distribution, set pieces and timing.

Sprints Lacking speed ? Always second to the ball ? Improve pace and reflexes.

Technique Need to work on those silky skills? Improve control, passing, dribbling, technique and timing.

Training match A good general work out of all player skills. Try and get one in every week. Improve all skills.

Weight training Improve strength and Concentration.

Rest Rest is crucial. Make sure you give players enough rest especially when heavily fatigued. Constant training and playing can result in serious injuries. You need to ensure players have sufficient time to recover. You can vary the training intensity to help manage fatigue.

Intensity You can set a training intensity. The higher the intensity, the better the player will respond in training. Be careful though, higher intensity can result in increases in fatigue and injuries are more common.

Creating Training Schedules

Schedules have been created to allow you to develop and maintain training plans. You plan out the required training assignments for a 7 day period. All managers can maintain one schedule. If you subscribe you can have many schedules which you can tailor to individual players or groups. For example you could create a training schedule specifically for defenders and then assign your defenders to that schedule.

Navigation

Navigating your way around the itsagoal site can be quite daunting as there are a lot of pages, and before you know it, you're lost. Don't worry, all the main buttons across the top of the screen and the sidebar down the left of the screen, always stay where they are. If you ever want to get back to your squad, for instance, just click on the Squad button.

Here, I will attempt to describe what pages you will find under each of the main buttons.
  • Home - This is basically the screen you see when you visit the site. There is a sub menu there called News which will show you the screen you see after you've logged in.
  • Manager - The Manager's Office screen. Here, you'll find messages, notices, recent results, and other stats. You can also edit your manager profile on this screen.
  • Club - The Club Home page. You will find your next fixture here, plus recent results and competition status. You can also update your Club's profile here.
  • Match Day - The Match Day Scheduler screen. Here, there is information about all your upcoming games with links to the Team Selection page. The Match Day screen is covered in the Matches post.

  • Squad - The Squad Home page. This has information about your squad and links to Training and your Youth Academy. The Squad Home page is mentioned in the Your Squad post.

  • Transfers - A hot topic on itsagoal! Needless to say, this takes you to the Transfers Home page. More will be said about transfers some other time. If you've just registered though, you won't be able to buy or sell for the first 21 days.

  • League - The League screen. There are 10 divisions in each league, the Premiership and the Championship, followed by divs 1 through to 8. With 20 teams in each division, this makes 200 teams in each league. You will therefore find yourself in a league within the itsagoal world. You league will have a random name such as Neon or Atlas. The League Cup will be contested with other teams in your league, while the Super Cup will be contested between teams from the whole itsagoal world. See the Matches post for more match info.

  • Competitions - The Competitions page has all the information about the cup competitions mentioned above. There are also buttons here for Reserve games and Friendly games. Note: You need to be subscribed to play friendly games.
  • Statistics - The Statistics page is where you'll find Player stats, Club stats, Game stats and your Manager and Club Rankings.

  • Community - The Community page is where the itsagoal forum can be found. The forums are a great source of information and should be browsed regularly. There is plenty of Manager banter to be had here too.

  • Help - The Help screen is where you'll find some guides on certain aspects of the game.
  • Shop - The shop page is unavailable at the moment. Possibly an area under development.

It is recommended that you explore all these pages and the links within them to get familiar with the site. You will find that there are many ways to get to the same page or to find the same information.

Icons

Also, on the right hand side of the screen, under your manager name, there is a set of icons which act as shortcuts to certain pages. Here they are:

You should explore these too as they may get you to where you want to be quicker than the main buttons. Briefly, they are, from left to right:

  • Inbox
  • Next League Game
  • Squad Management
  • Training
  • Fixture List (pop up)
  • Transfer Market
  • League Table
  • Stadium Summary
  • World Rankings
  • Community Forums

Enjoy getting to know your way around itsagoal!

Matches

You'll be wanting to know when your first match is, and it's the Match Day button that will show you. The Match Day button is in the main button bar across the top of the screen.

Clicking the Match Day button will take you to the Match Day Scheduler screen. There, you will see your upcoming games.

There are five kinds of games you can play in itsagoal. They are League games, League Cup games, Super Cup games, Reserve games, and Friendly games.

  • League Games are played by every club and are played every weekday except Wednesdays.
  • League Cup games are played on Wednesdays and Saturdays in the first half of the season. This is a cup tournament involving all the other teams in your league.
  • Super Cup games are played on Wednesdays and Saturdays in the second half of the season and this cup involves teams from every league.
  • Reserve games can be played on Wednesdays during the season and on other days in the close season period. Reserve games can be played against any other team by invitation.
  • Friendly games can be played by subscribers only and can be played on any day except Wednesdays. Like Reserve games, Friendly games can be arranged by invitation.

All games kick off at 3am GMT, except for Reserve and Friendly games, which kick off at 5pm GMT. The site will update at those times and will therefore be unavailable for a short period.

Your Squad

Ok, once you've registered and chosen your manager name and club name, the first thing you'll probably want to do is have a look at your squad of players. There are various ways of doing this, but I'm going to start with the main buttons across the top of the screen, seen here:

Click on the Squad button to go into the Squad Home page, seen here:

On this screen you can access the Squad Manager, Training, Treatment Room and Youth Academy screens, plus a few stats screens too. The Squad Manager screen will show you everthing you need to know about your Squad.

Here is the Squad manager screen:

Your whole squad can be seen on this screen, in position order by default, but you can change the information shown to you using the filter at the top. I've only shown down to the first 2 Goalkeepers on this screenshot.

When looking at your squad for the first time there are a few questions you should be asking yourself:

  • How big is your squad?
  • How many players do you have in each position?
  • Do you have enough Keepers?
  • How old are your players?
  • How long are their contracts?
  • What are your players' wages?

Assessing this information and acting on it is your job as manager and could be crucial to your success on the pitch. I highly recommend exploring every aspect of your squad. After all, these are the guys who are going out onto the pitch. It's best that you get to know them very well.
